I'm a lovecraft fan. He blends scifi and horror perfectly. I like how his stories are still chilling after so long and the perfect length to be read on a train journey. My favourite has to be The rats in the walls.

I yet have to pick him up - again. He was my first scary reading experience at the age of... 11?

Garner loves HP Lovecraft. I haven't read any myself, although I've played the Call of Chthulu RPG.

I only got into Lovecraft very recently, in the past few years. Rats in the walls is a great one, by the way.

It can be a bit of a nusiance to have to wade through some of the dross of his pulp material to find the REALLY chilling stories, but they're definately worth it.

And he is, of course, most famous for the Cthulhu Mythos. I saw a while back that a fan community had made a 1910s/1920s style silent movie of The Call of Cthulhu, and it looked to be a wonderful rendition of the story.

A computer game (Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth) also showed some of the same love and devotion to the source material. The game's based around The Shadow of Innsmouth, and some scenes in the game are perfect reproductions.

I played the game as well, and read Shadow over Innsmouth at Garner's recommendation. I must say both were of very high quality. Lovecraft can scare the reader quite well, he can get the... feel, the mood, the emotions of the characters quite well. And he's got a very active imagination. Too active sometimes.

It's his writing quality that's a killer. There's very little of it. But often what's behind the writing is so good that it's worth reading.

I think probably there are a lot of people who like Lovecraft's writing for the campy, B-movie melodrama, even though it may be off-putting to others.

Chthulu was every where at CONvergence this year, partly because of John Kovalic's My little Chthulu I suppose. He did a drawing for the Iron Artist panel that about busted me up Chthulu was wearing Bunny slippers and well you probably had to be there. I do go on about it don't I ? well it certainly was more fun then anything I've gotten to do in many many years.

I like his mythology, which has been hugely built up recently. But everything I've read about him is negative: not only was he really racist, he is also supposed to be way overated as a writer and is just fashionable at the mo. Saying that best to udge for yourself right?

Lovecraft can convey this urgent manic mood very well, it moves you right along to things that you can see coming and begin to dread right along with the characters. He has a way to get to your very gut with his writing, yeah some of it is sort of corny in the end but the man has a way with words. He was a pioneer in speculative fiction and horror and well ahead of his time I think, I would say he was perhaps under rated in his day and just now being read in the way he wanted to be read.
