The next book to be published in the Tiffany-Aching-series. We'll see how much of a replacement for Granny she is going to be, maybe.

Apparently PTerry has hinted, during his Wintersmith-tour, that Esk may make an appearance... Even if she doesn't make it into the final version - for me, that sounds like Granny tying together the last loose bits of her DW-career...
  2. Katcal I Aten't French !

the title is just "I will wear Midnight" ;)

I don't think Granny Weatherwax will ever end her career, unless she dies in some grand battle to save the Discworld or something.

I wonder if there should be an entry for Esk in the Discworld Informer character list, I'd forgotten all about her myself - but if she's coming back...?
  4. Katcal I Aten't French !

    **scratches head** Esk ?
  5. Maljonic Administrator

She was a one time main character, the only female wizard on the Discworld.

Equal Rites if you need a further hint.

Gah, that's one of the ones I'm missing ! Typical...

Interesting! I think this adds further credence to my theory that Tiffany is the replacement Granny.
  9. FairyHegehOGG New Member

But Tiffany intends to go back to the Chalk! She can't replace Granny in Lancre.
  10. Hsing Moderator

Why should she replace her in Lancre? They've got Nanny and Agnes, and, to some extent, Margrat is still around too (even though her official occupation isn't "witch" anymore). Tiffany could (theoretically) still replace Granny -in the far future- in the Discworld setting as such, and as a witch that's being written about by PTerry.
  11. FairyHegehOGG New Member

That would not be replacing her necessarily--because Currently you could say she is a Witch being written about by Terry on the discworld but you would not currently say she has replaced Granny would you?
  12. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

I think she is the replacement Granny in the sense of becoming central to the Witches arc of books - she will be written about in the same books as Nanny, Agnes etc when Granny is gone.

I also think she will be the replacement Granny in terms of status within the witch 'community' - see 'The Sea and Little Fishes' (short story) for an example of the kind of thing I'm talking about. We've already seen Tiffany being shaped up by Granny for this role.
  13. Kisstheabstract New Member

Wow I can't wait for the next one now!! I hope Esk is in it, although she hasn't been mentioned in any of the wizard books, which is slightly strange... Maybe she will replace Granny in the mountains, and Tiffany will remain on the chalk?
  14. Hsing Moderator

If, as I've read, "Midnight" is going to be the last of the Tiffany Achings books, then how can she replace Granny? This would consequetnly mean PTerry is planning not to write any more witch books at all.
  15. Kisstheabstract New Member

Hmmm good point... Ah well, we'll just have to wait and see! :)
  16. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

Where did you read it? It may be the last of the children's sub-arc, but does that mean Tiffany won't show up in the adult DW books?
  17. Hsing Moderator

It says so on a German fansite, without much emphasis though:
    Translation:
Nation - Terry Pratchett's next to next novel

    27.02.2007
Terry Paratchett talked about his next to next book on the Scheibenwelt*-Festival 2007. It will be named Nation, and will only take place on Discworld if it can't be avoided. Terry wrote a few thousand words of it so far, and says it will be "different" from his books so far.
before Nation, "Making Money" and a few other Discworld novels will be published.** Then, there'll be "When I'm old I shall wear Midnight", the last novel of the Tiffany-Achings-series that has been recently announced.

    Similar information here:
    4 Tiffany-Achings-Bücher geplant!
    05.06.2004
Terry pratchett plans writing four novels about Tiffany Achings. There is a short video on amazon.co.uk where Terry Pratchett tlaks a little about "A Hat Full of Sky". The most important information we gained from it, though, is that after "The Wee Free Man" and "A HAt Full of Sky" there will be two more books about Tiffany Aching and her education.

    *Discworld
**That probably relates to a few specifically German publishing dates, re-translations, and such.

So it's possible she'll be back in the adult books then. That says four books about her education. What happens when she's qualified?
  19. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

Right. That doesn't say no more Tiffany Aching, just the end of her mini-series.

I'm not surprised he's finally ready to write something that's not DW, though. I would have been trying to break out a long time ago!

Please read my comments on this on the "Equal Rites, is it just me?" thread.
  21. wasnt esk the seventh sister of the seventh sisters daughter or something like that its been a while since i read equal rites.
  22. mowgli New Member

Close  I'm pretty sure she met all the requirements for a wizard (i.e. being the eighth child of an eighth son), except for the whole being-a-man clause.
  23. sorry mowgli like i said been a while since i read equal rites
yet again showing my complete and total dementia at books i have read.
talking to a mate the other day about feegles and argued for a full hour that they were 1st seen in a hat full of sky just completely forgot about wee free men but then again iam gettin old or so my kids say anyway
  24. Stercus Stercus New Member

Erm, I thought it was Carpe Jugulum that they first appeared in. Wee Free Men was just the first Tiffany book.

    Granny's Replacement

I don't think Tiffany is going to replace Granny Weatherwax. I think she's meant to replace Granny Aching.
  28. Maljonic Administrator

She's already replaced Granny Aching, hasn't she?
  29. dennishenley New Member

    Who replaces whom?

She's trying to fill Granny Aching's shoes but she is still learning. That's why she went to study with various witches. I think when she's ready she'll be considered a replacement for Granny Aching.

As Pratchett has said in another book, if Granny Weatherwax is replaced, it would most likely be with Nanny Ogg and Nanny Ogg's place would be filled by Magritt. Tiffany would fill Magritt's place.

It's been a while since I read that one so I may have the spellings wrong.
  30. Maljonic Administrator

I just meant that Granny Aching was never really there as a character in the first place, she's just kind of a backstory memory.

I don't think Tiffany will be replacing anyone. Magrat Garlick is much more a new age witch I think, where Tiffany is like a witch of old like the others.
  31. TamyraMcG Active Member

Nanny and Granny are two of an age, they just happen to fill two of the roles of the perfect witch triangle that is the best hope for witches to work in- The Maiden, the Mother, and the "other one", for no one really wants to be thought of as the Crone. Granny still qualifies as the Maiden since her romance with Mustrum Ridcully was so starcrossed, though as she has been known as Granny for politeness sake for so long she sort of seems older then Nanny, but they were girls together. Magrat is probably Nanny's "replacement", Agnes is probably Granny's, at least in Lancre.

Tiffany may be Granny's replacement as the most powerful leader of witches, who of course say they are equals and only ever admit that Granny is their leader when they don't have to. She will take over the vacancy left by her Grandmother, who was probably a witch of a special sort, one so powerful she wasn't even known to be a witch.

Tiffany has a much wider world view then her grandmother, but she is probably going to marry that boy who gave her the Horse, she will need all the experience she can get to manage to bridge the world she grew up in with the world she will live her adult life in.Someday there will be someone who needs Granny's cottage and someone who needs Nanny's. But who knows if those stories will be told here on the round world.

I don't even remember this thread. Each time I was collecting my thoughts into a post, I found I'd already made it.

I have a prediction for Midnight, but i hope I'm wrong.

Its hinted that Midnight will be the last of the Witch series.

In the last couple of books at that feature Granny and Tiffany there are plenty of references to Witches going 'to the bad', such as Black Alice, when they become too powerful. Indeed, the established older witches seem to wonder why this hasnt already happened to Granny.

I think that whatever the threat in Midnight, the strain may push Granny over the edge into 'the bad' and Tiffany will be the only Witch with the power and guile to subdue her.

Maybe the protaganist will be Esk, but i think that this is a red herring.

I've given this alot of thought, as Granny is easily my favourate character in the whole of literature.

Could someone please come up with reasons why i could be wrong and stop me fretting
  34. Maljonic Administrator

I'm not sure Terry would ever deliberately write a final Witch book. I like the idea of Granny battling against going bad though. :)
  35. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

Casadamo, I hadn't thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense! Good theory.
  36. mavzb New Member

I don't think there could ever be a 'final' witches book. Even if (some of) the witches we know about go 'bad', there will still be other witches, who carry on doing the things witches do. They may not be the main feature of a novel, but they'd still be filling their particular niche in Discworld life.
  37. casadamo New Member

I hope you're correct because i love the witches storyline.

I just worry that because of Terry's illness he may be getting to the point where he's thinking of wrapping some of them up. He cant go on writing forever; we're already seeing less books being released more slowly.

I good ending to a franchise would be more satisfying than leaving it unfinished.

Evil Granny Weatherwax, now there's a scarey prospect.
  38. DEATHOFRATS New Member

    Talking about wrapping up...

Were the Watch Books officially "wrapped up" by Thud!?
  39. Hsing Moderator

Not officially, but despite liking the book a lot, many people felt that Vimes' stories were mostly told.
  40. Joculator The 'Old' Fool

Paul Kidby has completed the final artwork for ISWM and there is a strong rumour is that it could be on the shelves around late June/early July. But you know what runours are like :)
