Question about the Wizard books.

I have read all of the discword books up to "The Thief of Time", and now I have a question. Or since I'm guessy Terry doesnt stop by here often *wink* more of a statement.

I have a really bad memory, but some things dont make sense to me. Some characters just fade away (here for 1 book, then into the background) But it seems they just disappear. Mort and (Isabel?) die in a carraige accident..Coin is never heard of again. Eric is another one, although for some strange reason the mutt sticks around till the end (Gaspode). Magrat takes a back seat to Agnes. I would have liked to see a reappearance by Coin...its not like sourcerors grow on trees, and by some of the latter books he would be in his late 20's-early 30's.

Lord Vetinari is from Uberwald, correct? I havent read the last few new books..but...is it just me, or do a few characters allude to him being somewhat *special*? Thin..pale..rarely/barely ever eats. Stays up all hours of the night. Call me dense, but more then once it seems like they allude to him being of a somewhat "more then human" nature. I know its probably nothing, but then again, why hint at something thats not there?

Last but not least...about when that lame priest gets hammered by Esme for his beliefs, and gets "proven" that Om isnt a real "God". Shouldnt the turtle have had some effect? Since theoretically the "gods" are made by belief, and as I remember, Om was now one of the big guys, shouldnt a Omish priest be somewhat holy? If they were in any other country and said, "Jeez, who believes in Io, you know the gods dont exist" they had better be standing close to a tall grounded building. Just a thought.

You might want to add a little spoilerspace.

    Like that.

    - Coin chooses exile in his own little world because he doesn't fit in the real world.

    - Gaspode doesn't feature in "Eric". A parrot does. It stays in hell. Gaspode first appears in "Moving Pictures" The main reason Gaspode returns is because he's a good character.

    - I think Vetinary isn't from Uberwald, can't recall though. As to him being a vampire (That is what you are referring too, isn't it?)... I don't buy it, although I do think he loves the rumour and is keeping it going... :)

Vetinari wasn't from Uberwald, he simply visited it in his youth. Given that he was in Twurpe's Peerage, and was qualified to become Patrician, one would assume he was one of the Lords in Anhk-Morpork. It's highly unlikely that he's a vampire, since there are so many ways of sussing the bastards out. Werewolves, including Angua, would be able to smell him out. Other vampires would know. And a vampire wouldn't be harmed by arsenic.

Speaking of vampires, the reason the turtle had no effect was that the vampires had trained themselves so as not to be harmed by any holy symbols. They had a great deal of trouble at the end when they started losing this ability. Presumably, if Mightily Oats had presented them with his turtle at that point, they would have been repelled by it. Unfortunately, he'd lost it by then, and had to make do with a very sharp ax.

EDIT: Ba should point out that he's aware that nobles of other lands are also in Twurpe's Peerage. He's just pointing out that Vetinari was firmly of the upper classes. That he became Patrician points very strongly to Anhk-Morpork origin.

I believe, though i'm not sure, the Vetinari's where a powerfull family in Anhk that seemed to be dying out. I think Ventinaris parents died and his only relative is an Aunt.

Ah yes, thank you all. My memory is seriously patchwork sometimes. Alot of that makes sense. I guess thats what happens when your a speed reader ;)

I knew gaspode wasnt in eric, Just pointing out that some characters just vanish. Like Eric and the Girl etc. The part about vetinari also makes sense, but I still dont see why Angua's mother (or the other lady) were hinting at something. And he is a bit strange to be completely human.

I have received the rest of the books today, so I am sure I will be polluting these threads with more of my mindless garbage by wenesday.

I think the other lady (Lady Marlotte-or something) was hinting that She and Vetinari had some kind of an affair/relationship- or at least thats how I always read it. I also believed that it was he that turned her off human blood. We know that vampires need a new obcession to give up the blood and I think he showed her that she can get the power from politics not blood.

Some characters stay and some go, probably becuase some are more interesting tp pratchett or they can more places to grow/ways to be used.

Vetinari is the way he is because of his background as an Assassin.

Vetinari's aunt was from Genua just to tell you know, i cant remember who wanted to knw, twas in Night Watch.

Didn't it say she had "business there" in Nightwatch?
(I remember an "aunt in Pseudopolis" is being mentioned in "Guards! Guards!", don't have the time to look it up right now...)
However, that doesn't say anything about their respective origin.

    Hm...
Reading this thread, I am wondering why it was named "question about Wizard books", unless you'd accept every DW book a Wizard book...

ok a real wizzard question: which book is it said someones motto is eata lota pi or something similar, i forget
  11. Ba Lord of the Pies

Okay, here's question i'm sure many people have already asked, but what happened to Tethis between the end of "a colour of magic" and the beginning of "a light fantastic?" As far as i can remember he was in the Potent Voyager with Twoflower when it went over the edge of the world, and then just seemed to disappear and was never mentioned again! (Even by Twoflower or Rincewind!) Did Pratchett ever comment on this?

I thought he went on a journey through the stars, or am I thinking of someone else?
  18. pfft New Member

I think he had BEEN on a journey through the stars. If you remember, water trolls are not native to the discworld, and Tethis came from another world: "Bathys", when his "land yacht" went over the Edge. His world was disc-shaped too. The last thing it says in "The Colour of magic" about him is:

"Twoflower and the troll had managed to pull the hatch up. A metal ladder inside led into the cabin below. The troll disappeared.

...And that's it! So he's inside the "ship" when it goes over, but is never mentioned again in either "Colour" or "Light fantastic." I like the idea that maybe he left the ship and went on a another journey to another world, but nothing like this is even remotely hinted at! As it stands, it just seems as if Pratchett forgot about him!

Something just occurred to me though! If the spell in Rincewind's head can change reality by transporting Rincewind into the tree, and Twoflower into the lake instead of falling through space, then maybe "it" transported Tethis somewhere else too? But it still doesn't explain why he seems to have been wiped from Rincewind's and Twoflower's memory's.

Well, as I said in another thread, Garner and I have just started a re-read, so I'll remind myself of the plot before giving my opinion.

Just as an aside, Pfft, could you avoid abbreviations like 'u' for 'you'? We make it policy on this board to write in our best English, as many members are not native English speakers, we have several members with dyslexia, and we're a board devoted to the love of literature. Thank you!
  20. pfft New Member

Sorry, wasn't intentional! Just habit (been using my phone for too long).
  21. mr_scrub New Member

We have members with dyslexia?! Wow.
  22. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

I can't tell if you're serious or being sarcastic.
  23. Rincewind Number One Doorman

Yes. We also have members with syphilis and the pox! Well, I say “members” I mean me…
  24. Katcal I Aten't French !

However, we never quite figured out what causes the smell.
  25. Rincewind Number One Doorman

    That's Love, Kat, love.
  26. Katcal I Aten't French !

Nah, I've tried it it doesn't smell like rancid fish. Well, most of it doesn't.
  27. Rincewind Number One Doorman

Hey, rancid fish need love too.
  28. Katcal I Aten't French !

*hits Rinso with a rancid fish* Stop trolling !
  29. Rincewind Number One Doorman

    I'm not trolling. I'm being witty.....and bored.
  30. Katcal I Aten't French !

Well go post in Bored-ania then.

*smirks at self for being so witty*
  31. mr_scrub New Member

    I'm serious. I didn't know.

Rinso's one of them, in case you couldn't guess from his response.
