First time user - also the first time I've posted on a message board! This is acutally quite sad, but for over 10 years I havent understood a joke on page 64 of Pyramids. It's the one where Gern says to Dil "your name in lights.." Can anyone help? Thanks Arun
Hello Arun, 'Lights' is a word used, certainly in the north of England, to describe entrails and other offal, mainly 10 metres or so of intestine. I think you are referring to the scene where Gern is making the joke to Master Dil, the embalmer, when they are removing the pharoah's organs and putting them in to the canopic jars.. In which case it would be possible to spell out your name... Hope this helps. Oh, and welcome to the boards.
I will admit, it did take me a bit of thinking to get that one when I first read the book. I also had to check the internet to make sure I was right :smile:
I had to check that one on L Space, as I recall. I suspect it of being a bit of an old-fashioned expression. I have certainly never come across it elsewhere.
C'mon, knock it off guys... I feel really ancient now. You could get a package of lungs, liver and lights at any butcher up here until the mid 60's. Not pleasant to look at but when hidden by a crust and swimming in thick gravy.... Hmmmm, delicious.
