I take it you're okay, Sampanna? Anybody you know in that area?

It's quite north .. way up in Kashmir. My friend's girlfriend is from Kashmir, but luckily her folks are ok. Still, this sort of thing is happening way too frequently lately!

I hear that they fear there could even be up to 40,000 dead, they don't know yet. It does seem like this year we have lost 100's of thousands of people to natural disasters and freak weather. I hope 2006 doesn't follow suit. :(

I second that. I mean tsunami, Katrina, Rita, Stan and now this earthquake.

Read an article on a local news website that one US Preacher said this looks suspiciously like the end of the world.

Thats all we need - people running around screaming "the end is nigh"

But I hope in my heart that all survivors will be OK

I'm sorry to hear about this latest disaster. The bad weather this year hasn't exactly been a coincidence, though. Official bodies are now admitting that there is a link between global warming and the increase in hurricanes. So I'm afraid we [i:a5e8d65bbd]are[/i:a5e8d65bbd] in for another year of it if we can't curb our excesses. Perhaps it takes stuff like this for an idiot like Bush to see the necessity of action.

Hopefully he might see the problem is a real one now Grace but my only worry is that it's far too late. Even if new laws and standards are put forward now it'll take decades for some countries to meet these and them some still won't. By that time it may well be too late for some of the worlds population. :(

There has been some talk in Pune that the huge amount of rainfall there and in Bombay may be due to a new expressway between the two cities .. it might have disturbed local weather patterns. And it has rained a lot here, I've seen photos of buses floating on the water!!

Was there a lot of deforestation in the area recently?

Yep, loads. the expressway drove through a lot of wooded areas .. so not only are the trees gone but the heat and emissions from the vehicles have increased too.

I feel sorry for the people in that area then. Not only does deforestation change the weather patterns, it also causes soil erosion and makes flooding far more likely.
