A petition has been started to get Terry a Knighthood for services to literature. Petition to: recommend Terry Pratchet for a Knighthood for his services to literature. You can add your name to the petition via the above link (if you're a British citizen or resident only I'm afraid). I think that it would be a nice appreciation of Terry and all he has done for readers everywhere. I've just looked at the some of the other petitions. Some are rather silly - there's one to replace the national anthem with Gold by Spandau Ballet which has nearly 6000 signatures
I just had a reply! "Thank you for taking the trouble to sign this e-petition. The Prime Minister recognises the achievements of Terry Pratchet and the widespread regard in which he is held. But it is of course the case that only about 60 Knighthoods are granted each year and there are many deserving candidates for each honour. However, the government can assure you that your support for this suggestion will be taken fully into account." Apparently the PM recognises The Mathter's achievements so much that he can't spell his name
They're probably still smarting over what happened last time they granted Knighthood to an author  ... I'm sure Pterry has pissed off someone during the course of his career!
I'm not signing the thing. A knighthoods a rather frivilous thing, all in all. I honestly couldn't care any less if he had a knighthood or not. I'm sure the fact that lots of people buy his books is recognition enough for him. It pays a lot better as well. And, given his views on the whole monarchy system that come through in a lot of the books, i'm not convinced he'd be super pleased to have one anyway. also: e-petitions are nothing more than lip service to the masses. They do nothing except make people think someone listens to them.
