...at least in terms of ignorance, stupidity and assholery.

    Link.

I hate privileged white unmarried, childless women with well paying jobs who bang on about how Feminism has ruined their lives. Morons.

And this is supposed to be a left-leaning paper! Argh.

I think that's from where the article goes wrong. All the women she described until then are doing veeeery old routines. One aspect of them that slutty behaviour and sex without emotional strings are closely connected when the female sex moves outside of stady relationships. It is sad to see how many women stereotype themselves in that aspect, even though I know many of us work like this, because we all have been "wired" accordingly long before we started thinking about it. I know I have been.
How to blame that on feminism - I don't know, but I don't wonder either that it is being done.

Now, Ba's just a brutish, oversexed male, but doesn't the sexual objectification of women run counter to the ideals of feminism?

    That's what I thought too.

(In how far would that make you brutish, etc?)

I guess a lot of people decided that sexual freedom doesn't work on women without doing just that to them.

I never really trust the motives of articles like that, thinking they're written for people that already think that way and already agree with its message - of little intellectual value and extremely unlikey to create ephiphanies for anyone but the easiliy manipulated.

Well the author for this is the token right-wing columnist in an otherwise good newspaper. But it is frightening in how little controversy it has raised. A lot of people actually believe this stuff.

I also love how she seems to brush off the issues of rape and other violence against women on the basis that Valentine's cards are more important.

It is depressing isn't it. Sheep is a better word than people to describe them however.

Unfortunately many sheep believe what is written in the paper is true, because surely they would not be allowed to write it if it wasn't true.

I consider my self a feminist but I do think that young women are getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop in this day and age. It is expected that women today should try to have it all and that is all but impossible for most people. If you marry young and have kids just try to find a job that will give you the flexibility to do everything you want with them. If you stay in the work force you still have to contend with glass ceilings and less wages for the same work and there is a real good chance that when you do decide to have kids you won't be able to.

Feminism has made good progress but we aren't there yet, still I hardly think the actions of a handfull of young celebrities are signs that feminism has gone too far. As far as Britney Spears goes, why shouldn't she have the right to go a little nuts when she is leaving her kids dad? Every one going through a divorce seems to go through some personal crisis or another, I'm thinking about going blond myself. Why that reporter feels the public must have acess to Britney's kids I can't imagine. I'm sure she has hired help to watch them as she goes out, no doubt she does need help, but at least she is figuring that out, hair grows back, feelings get sorted out and life goes on. I hope she learns that before she sees the dumb myspace ad.

I think Britney Spears is having a nervous breakdown. And that's certainly not something that feminism introduced!

I cannot shake the feeling that the whole current Britney Spears thing is carefully calculated publicity stunt.

I really think she's too thick for that.

Someone who has been trained to fit certain images other people have designed from their childhood on, gets passed around like that, always in the spotlight, and in general being reduced to a product for others to be consumed, before being given the chance to grow a backbone and have their own say in it ([sarcasm]which is sooooo typical for feminism, isn't it... [sarcasm/]), has to go nuts sooner or later. Even with all that money on their hands, some child celebrities would have deserved amnesty international taking action.

While this is true, she also pays many people to do the thinking for her.

And I agree with Hsing, the children of celebs aren't too likely to grow up normal. Sad, but it would seem that glamor and money are a *suitable* environment for a child, and go a long way to replace just about everything else that makes a normal family.

As for the article, it builds chiefly on wistful and romantic thinking of "the good old days", not actually taking care to check what said old days contained. Which is to say, nothing to do with actual reality.

The reaction by the public to Britney Spears going mental has nothing to do with her being a woman or feminism and every thing to do with her being a celebritity.

If that is what being famous is all about I hope to stay unnoticed.

Is there a term for uncle-tomism but for women and feminism? If there is, it'd fit the article, if it isn't... well, lets make one.

And I agree with rinso, I mean, there was no press when I shaved my head
