http://www.dragonmount.com/RobertJordan/?p=90 Personally, I haven't read the Wheel of Time books, but I know there are people on the boards that did.
Same as the phlon, I have never gotten around to reading any of his stuff, but I know that many people enjoyed it and from the message on the website he was certainly loved and will be missed.
Damn! And I mean that in more ways than one. And some of them more selfishly than I should. Now I'll never know what happens in the Wheel of Time books.
Mazekin, Jordan had stated that his 12th book would be his last in the main series, and that he would leave extensive notes so that the book could be completed as he wanted it to be, should he die before finishing it (as it did happen). The book will be published, I think.
so long as we've got the plot notes, i'm sure we can find any number of tolkein fan fic authors who could emulate the style.
Ok, breathing a sigh of relief. Sorry, but I really do hate being left hanging like that. On a side note, realising how utterly selfish I sound, I would just like to extend my condolences to his family & friends. His creative genius will be missed.
I found it a bit depressing that the first time I heard about this was when I got an email at work from corporate headquarters ordering every store to immediately display his books and order more.
I don't know this author, but I do applaud his attitude in leaving enough notes to complete the series. I feel that authors who write this sort of series have a duty to their readers not to leave them hanging just because the author has died. I am not sure whether Robert Heinlein worked this way and whether "To Sail Beyond the Sunset" was a "clear-up" of a lot of plot-lines set up to be penned after his death, and I am not sure whether the Jill Patton Walsh continuation of the Lord Peter Wimsey series counts in this respect, although she has so far worked from notes - but she has managed to make the transition so seamless that I hope she will continue the series.
