[quote:1a7e320175="Yahoo! News"] A computer expert has spoken of his astonishment at seeing a taxi driver interviewed on BBC television news in the mistaken belief it was him. Guy Kewney was invited to BBC Television Centre to answer questions on the legal battle between the Beatles' Apple Corps and Apple Computer. As he watched the BBC's News 24 channel in a reception area while waiting to be interviewed, he was gobsmacked to see "Guy Kewney" appear on the screen. Mr Kewney, who is white, is a specialist in computers and information technology, having worked as an IT journalist and founded newswireless.net. But the "Guy Kewney" who appeared in the BBC slot was a black man who did not seem to know much about the complicated High Court case. The cabbie, who has not been named, gamely attempted to answer questions fired at him by BBC consumer affairs correspondent Karen Bowerman. He had been waiting for his fare in reception when he heard the name Guy Kewney called out. Presumably expecting the expert to follow him to the taxi, he raised his hand - and found himself being ushered into a studio and fitted with a microphone. On his website, the real Mr Kewney said the cabbie "seemed as baffled as I felt" when asked about the consequences of the lawsuit live on BBC News 24. Only when Ms Bowerman announced live on air the name and title of the man who should have been there and asked the first question did the driver realise therehad been a mix-up. Admitting the mistake, a BBC spokeswoman said: "We apologise to viewers for any confusion."[/quote:1a7e320175] You can watch the interview here: http://img.dailymail.co.uk/video/cabbie.wmv edit: to fix title
Wow... he actually handled it quite well. I like how the interviewer just accepted it, completely unaware. Just goes to show that people interviewed on the news can get away with talking complete bollocks.
That is so funny. You wouldn't have realised at all though just from that clip, that he was the wrong guy. He handled it extraordinarily well in my opinion.
I liked his face when he heres the name and what he's supposed to be an expert of the fact that he then proceeds to bollocks his way through it by repeating the some thing over and over again is just gold...
He has clearly got show business in his soul - where a lesser person might have embarrassed everybody by pointing out the mistake on live television, he behaved in the best tradition of "The show must go on"!
"a lesser person"? Anybody else wonder why he didn't ask why he was being fitted with a microphone and told to sit in front of the camera? This is ridiculous. Funny, yes, but he had a chance before the camera to let them know, he should have said something. Or at least embarrassed the fools at the station who didn't know what Kewney looked like. That's sloppy work, that is. Though I like how she managed to almost give him an answer with the question.
Priceless! :-D That look on his face when he realises what's happening, my stomach hurts from laughing.
I looked up the real Guy Kewney and found his blog. Turns out he's upset that people think he's "an ignoramus who knows nothing about technology or Apple or iPods, and has a very poor command of English". As people commenting his blog post pointed out, he's getting far much more publicity this way than if he'd just appeared as another white, bearded, bald guy commenting the Apple/Beatles case.
OMG Collecting a cup of coffee while waiting for your fare 20p Making a call to your control centre to see why fare is bloody late 50p Look on face when sat in front of television camera and told your name (which isn't infact your name) PRICELESS........ That poor bloke!
Heheheh. Do you think the newsreader was told in an earpiece that that was the wrong guy? When she switched over to speak to the other bloke on the screen she seemed a little distracted. "Now, er, I think we can er, talk to, er..." He did handle it very well though. Bravo, that taxi driver.
He was told that he was to be on the news for a reason. When the question was first asked he replied, "When I came, they told me something else." I couldn't understand the last part of the sentence.
Well, according to the BBC news site, he wasn't a taxi driver. He was actually called "guy gouma" and was there for a job interview. He ended up going to the wrong one, and was confused why the questions weren't about the job he'd applied for
Another link to this story - if the BBC doesn't give him a job now, the personnel department should be ashamed - even if it is not the job he applied for, he handled the situation so well he could probably present his own show! I wonder if he cooks, redecorates or knows anything about antiques? That should give plenty of opportunities!
Hee hee hee. :snakeman: Yup. . . .wouldn't be much difference really- Interviewer: "So, what do you feel about the so-called "war on terror"?" Fake Tony: "I have an opinion on this very important issue, and that opinion is that I agree with George Bush." Real Tony: "I have an opinion on this very important issue. I think that although there has been a lot of controversy surrounding this issue, that we acted correctly according to the information we possessed at the time." Oops, mixed up those statements.
I thought the guy did really well, although I don't imagine him presenting the news! It seemed that the interviewer was rather leading with the questions anyway
In a further development, the official site has been launched. This quote from a visitor made me laugh: [quote:8ac4db1a7d]This story made my day and I have spent a large amount of time trying to research his history. He is a true legend of our time and a real inspiration.[/quote:8ac4db1a7d]
