I heard on the radio the other day that the UN wants the US to give over control of the Internet to a new agency that would be more fair to the rest of the world. I guess it would be like the way Ma Bell(AT&T) was forced to let new long distance companies use their networks. All that happened then was that we had a bunch more crooks get their hooks into the communications business and now it costs $50 to accept a collect call.
Al Gore would never allow that to happen!! As it was said to be the number one reason to vote for him, He gave us the internet, and he can take it away.
i will personally stab the next six million people who make or reference that stupid misquote about gore and the internet. let the two never be used in the same sentence henceforth ever again. that said, please put the internet in the hands of the UN. that way it'll finally be unregulated and self destructive, because you know there just isn't quite ENOUGH porn out there yet
I am not sure if the voice talking about this was Rush Limbaugh or a wannabe, but it sort of gave me the willies just thinking about it. It really gave me the willies when I thought I was actually agreeing with someone of that ilk. I was much relieved this morning, when the same person was spouting off about a labor union being incapable of helping the US economy, and I could go back to thinking the guy was a BFI again.
Even BFIs sometimes share similar opinions to us. Unlike the song, this is not a black and white world.
Niven's Laws, #16: There is no cause so right that one cannot find a fool following it. Just because idiots are doing it doesn't necessarily make it wrong, anymore than something is necessarily right because someone "smart" is doing it.
CY was right, I was referring to Al Franken's book about Mr. Limbaugh. It was a pretty funny book and I wish every ditto-head would read it.
Regardless of whether or not it’s a good idea to turn over control of the Internet to the UN, it just shan’t happen whilst King George, The Mad, is still in office. I’m not completely sure what I think of the idea; as much as I support the continued existence of the UN, one most admit that they are wretched administrators. I think we’ll all be best served if it was all run by a non-for-profit with no political, moral, or religious agenda. P.S. Silly Garner, you can’t have enough porn on the internet.
A nice enough idea, but finding such an organization would take a while. Also, if a miracle is granted to us and such an organization truly exists, it will stop being an agenda-less organization as soon as it gets control of the web.
Oh, I'm around, more or less. Just that there's no real internet connection at home, and I didn't have a chance to visit the uni for a while now. At the moment, I'm using a wireless modem, which is working quite nicely with Orange's 3G cellular network, but I won't be using it much due to lack of money. All will be well once more once the semester starts. No... wait a sec... that sentence contradicts itself in some way...
