Where's that damn sign out button!?

Right, Garner at the keys as if the title wasn't a give away.

My computer's dead at the moment, power supply is fried and I can only pray that it didn't take any of the other components out with it. A quick look around suggests that it's gonna be about £90 to get a replacement, and we happen to be utterly skint at the moment.

So, who wants to loan* me ten quid? If enough people want to loan* me the money, I can get back on my own computer and resume ignoring you and your petty concerns.

    Anybody?

    Somebody?

    Damn.

*Note: You will never be repaid. In any way. Not even karmicly.

found the sign out button at least... never can remember where it is...

also, for the record: i have never played unreal tournement in my life.

And you wouldn't say "God" either, why talk to yourself ?

Don't have any spare money in any currency, but I sympathize... The same thing happened to us about 2 weeks before our wedding, and blew everything, motherboard, hard disk, memory, the lot, 4 years of photos, wedding preparation, all the music I had copied and cued ready for the evening do after the wedding. I hope that at the very least your hard disk survives, losing material sucks, losing work really sucks, but losing personal stuff is unbearable... :(

You'd have to do something very extreme to lose all the data on a hard disk, it's almost indestructable.

i sunk about $5000 into this computer, and built it in mid january of this year.

i'm not even going to countenance the thought that i've blown up two £300 video cards. if just one of my harddrives is damaged, then my data is fucked because they're in a RAID0 array. i went with a (supposedly) decent power supply unit as well, the only 'cheap' components in the whole box were the memory chips, which were from a top manufacturer's budge line.

so, if its more than just the PSU that's fried, i may cry like a little baby and then try to bake the computer into a pie.

    Oooh, computer pie!

Unfortunately not, ours got burned out by an average-sized power surge, technically there may have been a way of getting some of the data back, but the operation would have cost something like 150€ per Meg to get anything back, if anything was still there... That's a solution that's only used by big companies with important data, for personal stuff and pics, it's not worth it. Computers can be surprisingly fragile things...

the frenchie's got a point.. data recovery specialists charge a fortune for what they do. sadly, if the drive's suffered a mechanical or electrical failure that stops it from working, the data may well be perfectly intact, but a poor person aint ever gonna get access to it again.

Okay, but I've rescued data from a couple of totally formatted disks myself in the past, pictures and text files, without involving expensive companies.

A mechanical or electrical fauilure doesn't mean erasure. It simply means that for the rest of the computer, it's dead weight. The reading and writing heads must be able to move. The data and power connectors must be *not* fried. If you can actually detect and manipulate the HD, then you're in luck.

As Roman says, a formatted disk is still a valid piece of equipment, a computer will still detect and recognize it, and in most cases, the data is still there, just dismantled, whereas a disk that has had one or several small components fried or damaged in some way may still have magnetic data physically present on it, but it cannot be used on any computer and must be dismantled and handled in a white room (sterile environment) which is why it costs so much.

All this said, fingers crossed for Garner's disk and the rest of his PC, waiting to find out is a lousy time to be in...

Oh, wait, plastic bunnies don't have fingers... ears crossed then... :cooler:

Maybe you should bury it in the backyard with the bird feeder?

Both of which represent failed technologies.

Not being at all technically knowledgeable in such matters, I have given my limited advice... You can choose to ignore this advice, but it'd prbably be at your own peril.

    Good news, everyone!

The part that seems to be broken is apparently still under warranty and we are getting it replaced free of charge.
  16. OmKranti Yogi Wench

    Huzzah!!

Edit to say: I guess this means no computer pie for Ba.
  17. spiky Bar Wench

And the birdfeeder remains by itself as the only failed technology... So lonely in the backyard...

I hope this part works better than the last one.

Yay for Clay('s computer part being waranteed and all that, but too much and it doesn't rhyme any more)
