They auditioned by uploading themselves playing their instruments. Internet community in various forms seems to be an unstoppable reality of modern times.
I just got around to watching that video. It's really very good. Nine months practice in orchestral terms is not a lot of time to get to know your fellow players and a new conductor. The final result is better than some professional orchestras I've heard who have played together for a lot longer period.
