Good grief. Good luck, Om. Thank God you're a coper - I just wish you didn't always have to be! *hugs*
  3. OmKranti Yogi Wench

I wish I didn't always have to be as well. It does seem like I've been going through alot lately. It's funny, as soon as I think I have mastered on growth period I get catapulted into the next.

To tell you the truth I'm a bit fried and tired. I need a break.
  4. fairyliquid New Member

Good luck Om, I hope the new job works out. That goes for all the other new jobbers lurking around!

I'm getting totally and completely confused about universities. I've spent the last few hours browsing around attempting to decide on some possibilities.

This is a 4/3 year commitement, it will be where I will live, it will be an entirely new experience so I want to make the best possible diecision.

So far I have narrowed it down to something englishy possibly combined with something else, though not necessarily, somewhere in Scotland but possibly England and potentially Wales, most likely in a smaller place - not a city - but not definitely.

    Goodness gracious me
  5. Katcal I Aten't French !

    *hugs Om, just because*

We just got back from 3 days of "hedge"* cutting at my in-laws' place, absolutely bloody exhausting. But very satifying to get it finished. We'll have to do the rest (it's a 2-part hedge) in a couple of weeks, that's going to be even more fun, as the exit for the septic tank happens to run right past it... So we've done "cuttong the hedge in the rain", next time it'll be "cutting the hedge knee-deep in old poo." Ewww.

Still, seeing the heap of branches grow and the hedge become reasonably-sized and neat once again, although now bare from all greenness was mucho satisfying. The final heap needed removing in several trips with a BIG tractor. I'll post pics or you won't believe it.

*hedge = what used to be a hedge before being left to grow wild for 5 years ("because the guy who used to do it died, you see, and he had a hedge cutter" - yeah, a basic one that costs about 60€ in any decent DIY store  ) and is now a tightly planted live of conifers that have reached 5m high and 4m wide.

Wow. Well done Kat! Sounds like quite a job.

Fairyliquid, good luck with the decision-making! My advice is to visit the places you're considering if at all possible. There are so many little things you might not be able to find out about otherwise.
  7. spiky Bar Wench

yay Kat the green thumb garden destroyer!

Fairy if all else fails eeny-meeny-miney-mo is a legitimate and tested method of choosing between life changing alternatives. Its how I chose my uni, where I was going to spend a year overseas and my car. I've been happy with all the chooses because its just such a relief not to have to worry about it any more :)
  8. Katcal I Aten't French !

Oh well, been to the interview, if they decide to, it would be a job as graphic designer, it's both exciting, and scary, because I have always been more of a webdesigner, but graphics is what I'm really into, it's just I don't know if I'm good enough. I guess that's for them to say.
  9. Garner Great God and Founding Father

    now don't be silly, Kat.

it's for your (new) co-workers to decide, then go to tell your supervisor their (negative) opinion without addressing any issues with you first.

Well, after a ridiculously long hiatus I have made my return to the boards.
It's been an insane semester, and I'm glad it's over.
I was also glad I dropped a class, since my others were filled with projects and papers. My fiction class required two 10 to 20 page stories by the end of the semester. And my Rhetoric class involved a portfolio that was very emotionally draining -- since I chose to write it all about my experiences with self-injury.

After going through this semester, I realized that I still have a lot of unresolved issues. And after almost relapsing I talked with my parents and decided to seek out some sort of therapy. Looks like I'm going to need a little more help than I thought to beat this, since it's still affecting me after two years.

So I've been dealing with that all semester. But it hasn't all been hard. Things have been wonderful with Evan, my new, close-range boyfriend. Things are also civil with Charles, my long-distance ex-boyfriend (he doesn't hate me. Which is all I really wanted!).
I've started playing D&D on a regular basis, and may start DMing a campaign within the next month or two.
Also, Evan and I are going to start working on a webcomic this summer, which I'm extremely excited about. I get to release my creative impulses in writing and art! Yaay!

So, that was my last few months. My main reason for not being able to post? My computer died. Literally. I needed to get my hard drive replaced, which took weeks, and a lot of money I didn't actually have. I also lost over a thousand music files. I'm hoping to take it in to try and salvage them, but there's no way of knowing.

I finally got off my butt and got a job. I worked in the cafeteria on campus for about six weeks, but then the Engineering library found my application in the database and offered me a job for the summer and fall.
Today's my third day at the library. It's a ridiculously easy job. Which works out for me.

So that's what my summer is going to be. Work at the library, a summer class in June, hanging out with Evan -- and writing that webcomic. And playing lots of D&D and such.

And being glad that I finished freshman year in one piece!
Hooray! Only three more years to go! :D

Congrats Hex. I had a class with a portfolio last year and while my topic wasn't as personal as your's it's still stressful because if you failed the portfolio you failed the class. I passed though so I didn't have to take the class over again. I also worked at the library at my school and it is ridicuously easy. I basically sat on the front desk computer and played the 30+ games of solitaire that they had.

I just got my grades from my final semester and I passed everything and I recieved a letter saying that all my community college classes transfer to Michigan Tech and they schedule all your classes for you so I don't have to worry about that. I did just send in my housing application and I'm a tad worried about that because most people send those in at the beginning of the year to get the rooms they want.

Hex, your immediate future sounds pretty cool to me.
  14. Katcal I Aten't French !

back hurt. can't sit up. husband typing. hedges suck.
  15. Katcal I Aten't French !

Husband is a real little angle, he has now rigged up the laptop so I can type with it balanced on my tummy. I now know what to say to any doctor who tells me to loose weight. "nope, my tummy is just the right shape for balancing a laptop on."

We spent the last 4 days finishing the Hedge Adventure 2.0 and to finish off the weekend did a little light gardening. after all that, it was of couse by just bending over to pick something up off a chair that my back cracked and I ended up with a lumbago, otherwise known as a "fuckfuckfuckfuckthathurtIcan'tmovefuckfuckfuck".

    Crap.
  16. spiky Bar Wench

    Such language Kat!

Nevermind I can imagine the pain and can fully agree with the sentiment.

Well, me and Dave have pretty much decided on all of the inclusions that will go into our house, from the outdoor colours, indoor paint, front door, electrical fittings, tiles in the bothrooms and the list goes on...

Would you believe how hard it is to choose between variations on the theme of white, off-white, beige, pearl, cream... etc... Its sucks.

Now we only have to finalise the kitchen, the tiling and carpets to the rest of the house and blinds/curtains.

Building starts in mid-June so it'll be all sorts of fun from there on.
  17. Hsing Moderator

Spiky, good luck. For the building of the house and everything that comes afterwards.

Kat, get better. You defended one monster of a hedge...

Me, I don't know. I feel somewhat ambivalent. In the little one's new Kindergarten, one grown up person is responsible for 18 kids, and that is a very new situation for her - in her old day care facility, two grown ups or even three took care of eight kids. It was extremely familiar.
In the new group, she feels somewhat lost, and is seemingly more home sick than I am. She keeps asking when we will return to Münster, and misses "her" kids. But it is like this in every facility around here - and without a day care, I can as well resign myself to depend on others for ever, or at least quite some time.
I have lost enough time as it is, I have serious loads of work piled up on my desk by now, and I am too late with most of them. I can't really start anything until that situation is solved and she settles in - for the last three weeks I had to pick her up after two hours or so. It is also new to me that I have to worry how she feels during the day. It was all so easy knowing she felt at home where I left her for the next few hours, I never had to worry.

The new town - well, it is a charming town, though we didn't end up in its nicest corner. I had a little culture shock when I went for a walk at 22.00, and met no other woman on the streets within the next 30 minutes. Only a few men walking their dogs. There would have been plenty of people on the street in my old town, and that would have made me feel comfortable. When the street lamps went out, I went home. I miss the burgeois character of Münster more than I would have thought.
All in all... I just haven't found my place yet.
  18. Katcal I Aten't French !

Hang in there Hsing, it takes a while to get used to a change of town, you will get used to it, and in no time your little one will be having great fun with her new friends and hardly remember the old ones.
  19. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

Kat, poor you! I hope your back feels better soon, and that Reg recovers from being an angle (is this because he's doing all the bending for you?).

Spiky, good luck with the rest of the house build! It's exciting, even if it is a bit brain-destroying.

Hsing, I hope you can get through the backlog of work quickly. It must be hard worrying about Malin, but I'm sure she's strong and happy enough to be fine until you can pay more attention to her situation. It always takes a while to get used to something new and different.

Well, I don't know when I'll actually find out anything significant, but i did put in for a new job at the potato plant, it would be a big step up if I get it. I'd be leaving the union but this job is way higher on the food chain. I'd have a title even, bacteriologist! The person who had the job before was very happy there for over 20 years so maybe it would be good for me, too. I think I'd be getting most weekends off and the pay is high enough that it would make up for not working so much overtime. I might actually get to have a life!
  21. spiky Bar Wench

Yay bacteria-less potatoes and potatoes not having to work on weekends. Goodluck Tamyra.
  22. Katcal I Aten't French !

Well, I have some more news, not about the new job , but I'm almost positive I'm going to CONvergence in Bloomington this July 6th,7th,and 8th. Lois McMaster Bujold Is Guest of honor and John Kovalic of Dork tower and My Little Chthulu fame is also a guest of honor. It sounds like great fun, a friend of mine from Myspace offered me the chance to go and I have the vacation days already. My cousin who lives near there has said I can crash at her place and if I can get a room at the hotel for that Saturday I'm all set. The only thing that would make this even better is if I also get to go to Rapid City for the 4th, but so far the clean-up is scheduled for the 3rd and that would be hard to do and make the convention. If they change clean-up to the 2nd I'll be able to do it all. But If I have to choose, it'll be the con. If any Doormen are going to be there, I will buy them a beer or beverage of choice.
  27. missy New Member

I have 2 bits of news this week.

I don't need to bankrupt as my ex has decided he doesn't want to. This means he wants to sell the house (which is in joint names) to pay off HIS debts. He has been told the debt is one debt and he can pay all (including the one in my name) or nothing! i'm happy with this choice as this will solve the problem of him contesting the divorce cos he wants the profits from the house! there will be hardly any profit and what there is i'm happy for him to have just to get rid of him.

The second is, i'm entitled to legal aid to get divorced. I don't earn enough to get rid of him so the legal system (ergo the government) will pay for it for me. I will finally be rid of my old life and can start my new one with no baggage, thank god i didn't have kids! I did feel a bit guilty about the legal aid but then it was pointed out to me (which made me feel old) i have paid tax and national ins for 14 years so why shouldn't i get something back. Ive never been on the dole or claimed a penny in benefits so just this once, i should let someone help me.......i can't believe my luck.

  30. TamyraMcG Active Member

Missy the relief you'll feel when this is over will make the trouble you feel now vanish, at least for most of the time. Never beat yourself up for getting a little help, it is one of the things we all need to learn to do. And if you have tears from time to time, well, I guess they do wash the junk inside away, go ahead with them when they come. Mine are fewer and farther between, I'm so glad you do have a new life in the works and that you are getting the boost you need to claim it.

in violation of whatever unspoken law it is that says only the womenfolk may use the members news thread, i just thought i'd take a moment to hoot and holler, as i've finally got a proper interview for a job.

    Woo!
  32. Hsing Moderator

I#m keeping the thumbs crossed! Really!
  33. Katcal I Aten't French !

So, Garner, babe, what are you gonna be wearing to the interview ? Got some new shoes ? Oh and don't forget to assort your handbag, details cout honey...
  34. Garner Great God and Founding Father

i'd say 'quiet, frenchie', but i'm really curious how one assorts a handbag. what does assort even mean?
  35. Maljonic Administrator

    Good look with the interview.
  36. Katcal I Aten't French !

As in "a gorgeous pair of new shoes and assorted handbag"...
Garner, honey, you really should spend less time on gamer forums and start reading Cosmo.
  37. Maljonic Administrator

Katcal, you can't "assort" just one object, i.e. a handbag. You need to have a few handbags to make an assortment. It's okay though, probably all that French polluting your English.
  38. Garner Great God and Founding Father

or all that cosmo, ruining her brain.
  39. Katcal I Aten't French !

Matching shoes and handbag... **sigh** Men.
  40. Garner Great God and Founding Father

yeah, but you wouldn't 'assort your handbag', you'd just 'make sure your accessories match'.

    tsk, women.
  41. Stercus Stercus New Member

My bag and shoes always match. I use a Tesco carrier bag and a ripped worn out pair of nike trainers.
  42. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

I'm afraid you can't assort a handbag, because there's only one of it. You could assort the contents, or assort multiple handbags though. If you assorted your handbag, you would be matching it with other handbags.
  43. jaccairn New Member

Good Luck! with the interview Garner.
  44. Garner Great God and Founding Father

thanks gang. the interview's on the 5th, so i'll try to de-lazify myself enough to let ya'll know how it felt when i get back.
  45. spiky Bar Wench

Does happy dance on Missy's behalf.

And don't sweat the legal aid... the governmetn and police let you down in helping you escape earlier, you may as well take their help to make it final.
  46. Saccharissa Stitcher

    I Aten't Ded.

And it's a holiday today, that's why I sat down to do some posting.

Agvi, I've missed you, I hope you have been happily busy. Glad to get to visit the boards abit:)
  49. spiky Bar Wench

Mal, something wierd be happening to the board. My post on the previous page was made well before Garner's announcement of jobhood, yet there it be. Looking all strange and out of place after a very amusing discussion of how to assort a single object*.

I think I'm losing it or the board is... I hope its the board.

*Yes it is impossible to assort a single object, even if you are trying to assort it with shoes. Assort is generally used in the case of variations of the same object rather than one item of multiple objects. Hence, you can have an assortment of handbags and shoes but not an assortment of a handbag and a pair of shoes...Just ask Grace.
  50. Katcal I Aten't French !

**smacks spicky with any large available fish**
    You're losing it.

On another good note "yaaaay Garner" I'm sure they will love you. Although i would grow the friendly beard back, you don't want to frighten them.
  52. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

Avgi, I'm going to chain you to the boards so you can't go away again.

Kat, I'm going to chain you to the Buzzfloyd Self-Righteous Dictionary and Complete Reference Work until you've learned the difference between countable and uncountable nouns and which verbs and adjectives can be applied to them. And then I'm going to teach you the finer points of Advanced Pedantry - ie including the requirement to have got it right in the first place.
